How to clean and repair a carpet?

The fear of having carpeted spaces can be common for fear that they will get dirty easily, because of the dust they carry, but it is enough to do a cleaning every 6 months to take advantage of its many advantages. In this project we will show how to clean a carpet and how easy it can be.

Some of the advantages of having carpeted floors: it is safer as it is a smooth and non-slip surface; traps dust and other bacteria, preventing them from being breathed in or causing allergies; improves acoustics, especially when it comes to apartments; increases comfort by minimizing the stress generated by walking on hard floors.

Before starting

  • Take out all the furniture, leave the space empty.
  • Rent the carpet washing machine and vacuum cleaner.

Step 1 - Vacuum

With a common vacuum cleaner remove all the trapped dust, because among other things, by removing the dust the drying will be faster.

Carpet washer rental

In stores you can rent a machine that washes and vacuums carpets for hours, days or weeks. They are very easy to use, they have written all the instructions on the dosage of detergents and operation. They must be passed backwards, that is, with the machine in front of the body, but walking backwards.

Step 2 - Make the cleanser mix

In the bucket that the vacuum cleaner brings, make the detergent mixture using 125 cc per 8 liters of water.

recommendations

It is recommended to cover the shoes with surgical protectors to avoid re-soiling the floor while it is wet.

Step 3 - Wash the carpet

  • The system of the washing machine is to inject the liquid with the cleaner and vacuum it immediately, leaving only 20% moisture in the carpet
  • It must be passed in an orderly manner, in stripes throughout the room, and always with the vacuum cleaner in front of the body and walking backwards.

Step 4 - Remove stains

If after washing some stains remain, you should use a brush and foam stain remover or spray bottle. It is applied directly to the carpet and the brush is passed to scrub and remove the stuck grime.

How to choose a rug?

When choosing a carpet, the first consideration is the traffic to which it will be exposed. Shoes not only step on and deteriorate the carpet, they also bring dust and other pollutants that accumulate in the fabrics. So for high traffic areas, you should choose a short and curly hair, which will be easier to clean because dirt will not easily penetrate your fabric. A good material is polypropylene, because in addition to its resistance and easy washing, it always remains soft to the touch and repels mold.

Step 5 - Final aspirate

With the same washing machine, suck up the excess water that remained after cleaning. Let the space ventilate overnight.

Step 6 - Neutralize the mites

Once the carpet is washed, a mite remover can be applied, which is a sanitizer that will disinfect the surface of mites, bacteria and viruses. Follow the dosage and application instructions according to the manufacturer.

Patch the carpet

Step 1 - Cut the damage

With the cardboard knife and a circular mold, which can be a glass, plate or dish (depending on the size of the damaged area) cut the damage in the carpet. It is better to be circular because that way the patch will be less noticeable.

recommendations

It is always good to save a piece of carpet for possible repairs, but if you do not have it, we advise you to remove a piece that is hidden behind or under a piece of furniture.

Step 2 - Cut the patch

With the same circular mold cut the patch that will be used for the repair.

Step 3 - Paste

Apply carpet glue according to manufacturer's directions. If contact adhesive is used, it has to be on both surfaces (floor and patch) let it air and then join them. If you use a water-based solvent carpet adhesive, apply only to the floor.

Step 4 - Press

Stick very well with your hand and put weight on the patch for 12 hours to ensure proper bonding.
